Mosquito Magnet IndependenceThe Independence model from Mosquito Magnet is supposed to be a big step up from the lower-priced Defender model. The Independence is larger, cordless, and like the Liberty Plus, it boasts a full 1/2 acre of greater protection and coverage (1 acre total) than the Defender.

And with a price tag nearly $300 higher than the Defender, you would expect a higher-quality machine that withstands the test of time. Unfortunately, the Independence from Mosquito Magnet has failed to live up the hype and, as a result, is our lowest-rated Mosquito Magnet model.

We’ve meticulously combed through dozens of real users’ experiences and testimonials regarding the Independence to give you the good AND the bad…and we’ve summarized those findings below.

The Good
  • Effective Mosquito Trapper…When It Works – most owners agree that the Independence DOES a good job at trapping mosquitoes and interrupting their breeding cycle…but only when the model actually works.
  • Up to 1-Acre of Coverage – the Independence is slightly larger than the Defender (1/2 acre) and packs a little more of a punch in terms of it’s mosquito-attracting abilities.
  • Cordless – The cordless Independence gives you the flexibility of placing the Magnet virtually anywhere in your yard – this helps draw the mosquitoes away from high-traffic areas that you and your family tend to gather.
  • Fixed Manufacturing Defect – the makers of the Independence have reportedly fixed the glitch that was causing many Independence models to stop working after a few weeks (the red warning indicator light would default).
The Bad
  • Durability – before Mosquito Magnet reportedly fixed the glitch with Independence, many users were left holding the bag with defective machines. Again, MM has indicated that a faulty manufacturer was at stake and they have corrected the problem.
  • Continuous Use and Upkeep – to effectively interrupt the mosquito breeding cycle, the Independence must be run continuously for weeks at a time. This means that the propane tank must be re-filled approximately every 3 weeks and that the Octenol attractant (or Lurex if you’re in the South) needs to be replaced every month while in use.

Most Helpful User Testimonials:

Tim – Atlanta, GA:

This unit works effectively after it has been going for a few weeks. Unfortunately, the quality control is terrible. Within 2 weeks to 6 weeks the unit won’t restart and I get a double flashing red light indicating a thermostat problem. The manufacturer will gladly take the unit back and repair under warrant, but this involves packing and shipping it and not having its use during mosquito season.

Stephen – Boston, MA:

I just wanted to update my review of this project since Mosquito Magnet really went out of their way to make things right for me. After the problems with the first two units, Mosquito Magnet reached out to me and apologized indicating they had been experiencing some defects due to new a manufacturing process. The shipped me a brand new unit free of charge and it has worked flawlessly ever since i got it. The new owners seem to be really standing behind the quality of these new units and i am changing my rating to reflect this. Thanks Mosquito Magnet!

Final Verdict:

We’d like to believe that with the high number of negative user experiences regarding the Independence, the makers at Mosquito Magnet truly did clear up any manufacturing defects and now have a top-notch mosquito trap. However, the jury is still out on whether or not the problems really have been taken care of and the track record is certainly less than desirable.

For now, we believe there are better Mosquito Magnet options and you should probably steer clear of the Independence until we can be certain the problems have been corrected. You would be hard-pressed to find a better model than the Defender MM4000 although if you need a little more coverage, the Liberty-Plus is another great option.
