Mosquito Magnet DefenderThe Defender model from Mosquito Magnet is one of the most popular and least expensive mosquito traps on the market today. But a lot of that popularity stems from the lower price point and overall brand name recognition.

This isn’t to say the Defender is not an effective mosquito trapper. In fact, only the Liberty Plus and Executive models are given higher ratings (which mostly have to do with their larger coverage zones) and most owners have been pleasantly surprised with the model’s effectiveness at eradicating the effects of mosquitoes around their yards.

But we would be doing a disservice to you if we did not mention there are some questions about the lower-priced model’s durability to withstand multiple seasons of use.

We’ve meticulously combed through hundreds of real users’ experiences and testimonials regarding the Defender to give you the good AND the bad…and we’ve summarized those findings below.

The Good
  • Effective Mosquito Trapper – most owners strongly agree that the Defender does exactly what it claims to and lives up to its namesake…it attracts, traps, and defends against a yard’s mosquitoes (and other biting insects) so you can enjoy the outdoors without the threat of constant harassment and biting.
  • Interrupts Breeding Cycle – perhaps the greatest benefit of the Defender is the fact that continual use actually prevents the mosquitoes in your yard from breeding and releasing an even larger volume of mosquitoes into your yard.
  • Non-Invasive and Quiet – aside from a slight purr when the machine is turned on, the Defender is hardly noticeable and is small enough to place just about anywhere in your yard without taking up a lot of space.
  • Quick and Easy Set-up – the Defender can be set up in just a few minutes and without a lot of tools or handyman know-how. The included manual also describes, in detail, how to position the Defender in your yard for greatest efficiency.
The Bad
  • Durability – though most owners acknowledge the Defender works extremely well at clearing your yard of mosquitoes, many users complain that the Defender sometimes stops working after the first or second year of heavy use.
  • Continuous Use and Upkeep – to effectively interrupt the mosquito breeding cycle, the Defender must be run continuously for weeks at a time. This means that the propane tank must be re-filled approximately every 3 weeks and that the Octenol attractant (or Lurex if you’re in the South) needs to be replaced every month while in use.
  • Corded – the Defender is the only Mosquito Magnet trap that does not offer the option of being cordless. This means that optimal placement in your yard may require an extension cord (though the cord supplied is 50 ft long).
  • Coverage - the Defender is the smallest of the five Magnet models and also provides a smaller zone of coverage (1/2 acre versus the larger models’ full one acre). But 1/2 acre is generally all you need anyway…

Most Helpful User Testimonials:

Mr. Fin – Central Ohio:

I am in week five (end of July) and the unit has captured about 50-100 mosquitoes in just the last 3-4 days. They appear to be newly hatched young. I am excited to think of all the offspring these insects WON’T be having and I am reassured that the MMD actually works in the presence of mosquitoes…Mosquitoes do not migrate so once you’ve knocked down your local population it is difficult for them to recover…The MMD does catch mosquitoes and probably does so better than other products. But the results are not instantaneous.

Mac – Newport, Rhode Island:

The mosquito magnet defender is wonderful when it works. Mine lasted 2 seasons and I then traded it in on a repaired unit at a licensed dealer. This one only lasted one season. So frustrating as it does eliminate mosquitos when working but you can spend a lot of money clearing the valve only to not solve the problem.

Mr. Monengrone – New York:

I bought this model in 2004 for my New England home. It is very effective in catching 10 to 20 mosquitoes per night…I haven’t had any problems with it breaking down for over 5 years. Perhaps, I got lucky with a good unit. Or possibly, it is because I turn it off every morning and this keeps it from wearing down.

Pros: Effective in catching mosquitoes consistently. Lasted over 5 years and still working.

Cons: The power line is starting to fray at the connector.

Overall, a good product. Would recommend.

Final Verdict:

It is safe to say the Defender from Mosquito Magnet lives up to its name and “defends” against the threat of mosquitoes. Well over 75% of the user reviews on Amazon (out of 160+) have concluded that the model does do the job and does it well. But with that said, a good 45% – 50% of users have also complained about the model’s ability to withstand constant use over numerous mosquito seasons.

Though we give the Defender 5-stars in terms of effectiveness and price, we do not feel comfortable giving the same rating overall due to the model’s penchant for breaking down after 1-3 years of use. We definitely agree that the Defender is one of the best mosquito traps on the market at removing the threat and minimizing the effects of mosquitoes in your yard…but if you do decide to buy this model, be prepared to replace or repair the unit every 2-5 years.
